The annual BC Farmers’ Market Awards recognize outstanding farmers’ markets, vendors, partners, volunteers and municipalities that are exemplary in adding value to their communities and the B.C. farmers’ market sector.
The Comox Valley Farmers’ Market came out ahead this year with five awards related to the market, while other markets, like Sicamous, showcased the desire to keep serving the community despite challenges.
Most Outstanding Community Impact–Farmers’ Markets
The outstanding community impact award recognizes farmers’ markets that excel in adding value to their communities by connecting consumers with local food, farmers, and artisan vendors through fresh and prepared foods and handmade products.
In the large market category, Duncan Farmers’ Market earned the top spot. The Comox Valley Farmers’ Market took the honours in the small market category, while the Sicamous Farmers’ Market was recognized as the leading medium-sized market.
Spearheading the Sicamous revival was market organizer Deb Heap, who stepped in when the market faced closure.
“The market vendors had dwindled in 2023 and it was going to be shut down, which I couldn’t accept,” says Heap. “The turnaround in 2024 was amazing. We tripled the number of vendors last year and held a market every week, even in the midst of extreme heat and weather.”
Heap says in 2025, the regular markets will begin June 20 and there will be more than 40 vendor sites.
Most Outstanding Community Impact–Vendor
This award recognizes exceptional vendors for their contributions to the farmers’ markets they support. The farm vendor winner was Forest Valley Acres of the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market, celebrated for its commitment to local food and community connection.
The non-farm vendor award went to The Cure Hot Sauce Company, also of the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market, recognized for its strong presence and customer engagement.
Most Outstanding Community Impact–Farmers’ Market Manager
Celebrating excellence in market leadership, this honour was presented to Leah Stoltz, farmers’ market manager for the Haney Farmers’ Market.
Best Contribution to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at the Farmers’ Market
Comox Valley Farmers’ Market was recognized for its outstanding contribution to diversity, equity and inclusion within their market and community.
Volunteer of the Year
Recognized for her dedication and contributions to the Coquitlam and Port Moody Farmers’ Markets, Cathy Nakagawa was named Volunteer of the Year for her outstanding service and support of the market.
Best Live Entertainment at the BC Farmers’ Markets
Honoured for their talent, energy and connection with market crowds, Easy Street Duo of the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market was named Entertainer of the Year for their standout performances.
Helen Fathers Partner of the Year– Municipality/ Community Partner
This award recognizes an outstanding municipality or community organization for their contribution and support of B.C. farmers’ markets.
