Imagine a generator, powered by the sun. That’s how Jeff McAloon, co-CEO of The Smart Energy Company, describes the Noreaster scalable, modular solar farm system.
“We’re trying to help farmers save a billion dollars in electricity costs,” says McAloon. “All the energy that’s produced by the solar farm is used at the farm first.”
Any unused power generates a credit to be applied to future electricity expenses. With electricity rates and other inputs on the rise, incorporating solar systems reduces overall power costs and improves profitability.
The system has proven effective in harsh and winter weather conditions. The two-sided solar panels are upright so that snow doesn’t stop solar activity. “It has taken a direct hit from hurricane Fiona and withstood it,” he says.
Each kit is designed for direct delivery to farms, with growers choosing between assisted setup and installation or a do-it-yourself option.
“It’s meant to be a staged approach,” McAloon says. “Think of it like a Lego kit.” ■
