The British Columbia Produce Marketing Association (BCPMA) plays a vital role in promoting and enhancing the fresh produce industry within the province and beyond. As a board member of BCPMA, I have seen firsthand how our organization supports its members by fostering meaningful relationships, facilitating networking opportunities and advocating for the growth of the fresh produce industry.
Connecting members for success
The BCPMA serves as a central communications hub, connecting key stakeholders within the fresh produce supply chain, including growers, retailers, wholesalers, manufacturers, suppliers, importers, distributors, transportation providers, customs brokers and food service distributors. Through strategic partnerships with organizations such as the Canadian Produce Marketing Association (CPMA), Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), Dispute Resolution Corporation (DRC) and the BC Chefs’ Association (BCCA), BCPMA effectively advocates for its members’ interests and promotes the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables.
Our organization provides robust networking opportunities for businesses and individuals across British Columbia, Western Canada and the United States. With over 135 members connecting with 105 local businesses, BCPMA continues to grow its influence and impact. Our events, such as gala parties, golf tournaments, social gatherings and family-inclusive sports activities, allow members to build relationships and share knowledge that strengthens their operations.
Promoting healthy eating and crop maximization
BCPMA’s mission is clear: to increase the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables. By promoting healthy eating through initiatives like the CPMA’s national Half Your Plate program, we actively encourage individuals to include more fresh produce in their diets. This emphasis on health is particularly important given the essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals and fiber found in fruits and vegetables, which are critical for preventing chronic diseases and maintaining overall well-being. Our ongoing partnership with organizations like the BC Children’s Hospital through BCPMA programs reflects our dedication to community health and well-being.
During the summer months in British Columbia, popular fruits include strawberries, blueberries, cherries, apricots, nectarines, peaches, raspberries and blackberries. On the vegetable side, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, bell peppers and corn are widely grown and enjoyed.
A commitment to growth and collaboration
BCPMA remains committed to providing its members with the resources and connections they need to thrive. Looking ahead, the BCPMA will continue to advocate for the fresh produce industry, support growers in maximizing their crop potential and promote healthy eating throughout British Columbia. BCPMA is a hidden jewel that benefits all of Western Canada’s well-being. Today, our team at the BCPMA, board of directors, staff and our president Zan Chow are passionate about driving our regional produce industry. Count on BCMPA to promote B.C.’s fruit and vegetable industries. Together, we are building a stronger, healthier future for all.
