Leaves changing colour signifies times of harvest, giving thanks and reminds us of the summer season ending and a new season approaching. The fall season feels almost like the start of a new year, the kids go back to school, schedules change, outdoor objects get put inside and a different sort of planning begins.
It’s also a time of thanks and appreciation for all that we have here. Giving thanks or charitable giving can take on the simplest form, whether it’s giving extra bags of apples to someone for a smile, helping out during harvest, taking time for family, donating as a company to your preferred charity or any other small way you give of your time or money. Whatever it is that moves you is valuable and important.
Earlier this year, I learned more about the BC Hospitality Foundation (pages 46-47). I had heard of the Foundation, but didn’t exactly know what they were all about. I was moved when I found out that the BCHF provides needed financial assistance to people in the food, beverage, and hospitality industry who may struggle financially due to an injury or illness. Missing time at work can mean worrying about paying your rent or other bills. That’s where the Foundation is there to help; you just need to let them know by applying. They also assist with scholarships for hospitality family members. So, if you know someone that could use this service, please read more about it in this issue and share the information.
One last thought on giving thanks, being charitable or acting thoughtful; what also comes to mind is kindness and compassion in being charitable. Enjoy the moments in your life when you hold the door open for anyone; a woman, man, elderly or teenager. Refrain from rushing in traffic, there seem to be so many accidents, or we just hear about them more now, holdback on grumpy gestures or comments and if you are feeling a little down yourself, simply smile, really big, like a Cheshire cat! Work all your muscles in your face. It works. I hope you are trying it.
